FHA Membership Update - August 10: FDREP and FHA Return to Play
Submitted By Kelly Palmer on Monday, August 10, 2020
As the membership is aware the FHA and the DMHA has been in engaged in negotiations over the last 2 seasons during the course of the PILOT Shared Boundary Agreement.  At the conclusion of the 2 year PILOT the agreement was to transition into a permanent “amalgamation or partnership” as per OMHA instruction.  The FHA and DMHA concur it has been truly a positive and learning experience, however there were numerous challenges in addressing the needs of the respective memberships in order to move the agreement forward.

As time progressed these challenges became more apparent and could not be adequately addressed in the merger and as such the Shared Boundary Agreement is dissolved. The FHA and DMHA wish to thank all of those involved in the process and affirm REP opportunities will continue to be available in both organizations; the FHA will continue to provide representative hockey at the AA and below categories.

With regard to the re-brand contest.  The FHA wish to thank all of those that participated in the process and contest, however as this was part of the FDREP partnership process this will not proceed.  The FHA will continue as the Flamborough Sabres and we are pleased to communicate that our OMHA award winning Jersey will continue on.

Return to Play-Plan

This week on August 8, 2020 the OMHA released an update to reflect OHF return to play guidelines starting in regions permitted to do so. See Attachment or click link-Bulletin: Return to Play – Stage 3 A)

In stating these guidelines, they are still subject to local authority and in our region.  The city of Hamilton have advised based on public health limits, that there will be a 20 participant limit on ice including coaches and instructors. Stage 3(a) does not involve hockey games, game simulation, or checking, it is strictly skills and drills maintaining social distancing.  Although OMHA indicates August 15 as the start date, this is dependent on municipality and local public health approval.  As indicated in our previous update, no municipal arenas in Hamilton will open before September 1st and at that time they will include (4), Harry Howell, Chedoke, Morgan Firestone and Rosedale Arenas.  More arena openings will be evaluated later as the need arises.

The FHA is currently evaluating the options of alternate programming and will be following HC/OHF/OMHA and public health guidelines with the health and welfare of our players being paramount.   You will receive a survey in the coming week regarding registration and programming options.  In order to adequately plan for the upcoming season we ask all participants to register online regardless of REP or HL interest. We need to know how many participants are expectant to return despite the potential for alternate programming. No fees are going to be collected at this time, this is all about getting numbers for the purposes of planning.   Things to keep in mind moving forward, in the event there is no representative travel hockey this season-which is a very real possibility, alternate programming may include:

  • Skills and Drills sessions
  • Tiered house league (3on3/5on5) that includes HL and REP players
  • REP partnership with another Hamilton REP organization for (3on3 or 4on4) League

Much of this is to be determined, as it is all based on how COVID-19 pandemic progresses.  Game play of any kind, however (3on3 variant or 5on5) is dependent only if our region progresses to Stage 3(c) of OHF categorization and approved by local public health and the City of Hamilton.

Going forward, please look for email blasts regarding registration opening and the survey-please participate as it is essential to our planning.

Thank you and be safe,

FHA Board of Directors
