U16AA Bring Home the Georgina Regional Silver Stick
When your U16AA Sabres are given the opportunity, they rise to the occasion and give it everything that they have.

That's exactly what they did this past weekend at the Georgina Regional Silver Stick Tournament.  These boys competed with heart and determination and never gave up, even when games weren’t going their way.  And that is exactly why they are now the Georgina Regional Silver Stick Champions!

They started off the weekend on Thursday with a 9:15pm game against the Aurora Tigers, fresh off a 9:15pm Wednesday night regular season win against West Niagara.  As tired as they were, they beat the Aurora Tigers 3-2 in a nail-biter with 22 seconds left in the 2nd period. Goals scored: #91 Blake Rodrigues, #10 Hudson Sookdeo, and #98 Thomas Garner.

Then on Friday, they were in tough against the 15th ranked Barrie Colts at 12:15pm. The Colts were surely out for redemption after the Sabres knocked them out of the OMHA Championship last year with a 2-1 OT victory.  But the Sabres were able to get it done after a strong team effort with a 1-0 win. Goals scored: #78 Caleb Delgarno.

Next, the boys were set to play the 9th ranked Milton Jr. Menace at 5:20p.m. No one will forget their toughest loss to Milton (then called the Winterhawks) in the finals of the OMHA Championship last season. But it was the Sabres who would be out for redemption this time, winning that game in the last 60 seconds 2-3, securing their ticket to the Semi Finals!!! Goals scored: #29 James Kostandoff, #17 Carter Law, and #10 Hudson Sookdeo.

And so it went, for the remainder of the weekend:

Game Four Win against Markham Waxers: 2-1. Goals scored: #98 Thomas Garner, and #11 Shane Wieland

Semi Final Win against the hometown team, Upper York Admirals: 0-1. Goals scored: #11 Shane Wieland.

Until we met the Menace once more in the finals on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.  After a thrilling weekend of hockey, it all came down to this. Your Sabres would take a 1-0 lead in the back half of the 1st period.  Milton would get on the board to tie things up by the end of the 2nd. Then we were off with Milton seeming to be applying a lot of pressure, but your Sabres still found a way to get a lot of good chances in that 3rd period and one “chance” we will remember with 48 seconds left, #28 Chance Spencer would score to give the Sabres a 2-1 lead and a 2-1 win to make them the Georgina Regional Silver Stick Champions and finish the weekend with a 6-0 undefeated record. Goals scored: #91 Blake Rodrigues, and #28 Chance Spencer.

This weekend was a total team effort, and we are proud of each and every player for this amazing accomplishment. But there are two players that need to be mentioned: our goalies; #1 Hiio Squire and #30 Memphis Swain. These two played out of their minds all weekend with both goaltenders getting shutouts in the 1-0 wins over Barrie Colts and Upper York Admirals.  These two made some awesome saves to help us become Georgina Regional Silver Stick Champions whether that was during the round robin, semis, or finals. Great work to the both of you!!

Congratulations to the players, coaches, and parents for this amazing accomplishment.

Now let’s go make some history at the International Silver Stick tournament in Newmarket this coming January!!!!
